ERICA, antheris basi bicornibus, inclusis; floribus solitariis, axillaribus, urceolatis, purpureis; pedunculis longissimis; foliis quaternis; ramis numerosis; caulis humilis. DESCRIPTIO. FRUTEX pygmæus, elegans, ramosissimus; ramis et ramulis flexuosis, erecto-patentibus. FOLIA quaterna, linearia, glabra, supra plana, subtus sulcata. FLORES numerosi, simplices, axillares, in medio ramulorum, et sæpe terminales; pedunculis longissimis, coloratis, ad basin bracteis tribus instructis. CALYX. HEATH, with tips two-horned at the base, and within the blossom: flowers grow singly from the axillæ of the leaves, pitcher-shaped, of a purple colour, and with very long footstalks; leaves by fours; branches numerous; stem low. DESCRIPTION. AN elegant dwarf shrub very branching; the small and large branches are flexuose, and between erect and spreading. LEAVES by fours, linear, smooth, flat on their upper surface, and furrowed beneath. FLOWERS are numerous, and grow singly from the axillæ of the leaves about the middle of the smaller branches, and often terminate them: the footstalks are very long, coloured, and furnished at the base with three floral leaves. EMPALEMENT. Cup four-leaved; the leaflets are ovately pointed, and finely sawed. BLOSSOM pitcher-shaped, of a bright purple colour, smooth, and shining: the segments of the border are equal, round, spreading, and nearly reflexed. CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads, with tips two-horned at the base, and within the blossom. POINTAL. Seed-bud turban-shaped, long, and furrowed. Shaft thread-shaped, and just within the blossom.
