In 1803 she appears to have been set up in the world of fashion by the Duke of York, whose mistress she became. In 1809 her practice of accepting bribes from those desiring military promotion scandalised the House of Commons, and compelled the Duke to resign the post of Commander-in-Chief of the British army.
