The town is delightfully situated on the |declivity of a hill, and is a borough by prescription, so ancient |as to be mentioned in King Alfred’s will. In the church are four |stately monuments of the Earls of Arundel. Here formerly was an |harbour capable of containing ships of 100 tons burthen, though it |is now much ruined by the sea.
