He was acquainted, no doubt, with the _Legenda Aurea_ or some similar collection, and he seems to refer also to the _Vitae Patrum_. The moral and devotional books of his own day must have been pretty well known to him, as well as the lighter literature, to which he had himself contributed (_Mir._ 27340). On the whole we must conclude that he was a well-read man according to the standard of his age, especially for a layman, but there is no need to attribute to him a vast stock of learning on the strength of the large number of authors whom he quotes.
