=Gallatin, Albert.= _Sd._, 1761-1849. A financier of distinction. He came to America from Switzerland in 1780, and was active in political affairs. He was secretary of the treasury under President Jefferson; an associate of Adams and Clay in negotiating the Treaty of Peace with Great Britain in 1815; minister to France 1816-23; subsequently minister to Great Britain. After his retirement from public life he became a banker in New York city.
