A popular author and lecturer whose writings met with severe criticism as literary productions without being materially affected in popularity. They were addressed to average commonplace humanity, and exerted a wide and helpful influence. He was editor of The Springfield Republican, 1849-66, and of Scribner’s Magazine from 1870 until his death. His writings in verse include, Kathrina; Bitter Sweet; The Mistress of the Manse; The Marble Prophecy; Garnered Sheaves, including all his poems up to 1873; The Puritan’s Guest, and Other Poems.
