As the years passed they were marked by a succession of public tributes. At seventy the most famous of the annual "_Atlantic Monthly_ Dinners" was arranged in his honor. At eighty his home state officially celebrated his birthday. The anniversaries that followed were recognized in the public schools of many states; and so with "honor, love, obedience, troops of friends" he came to the end in 1892.
