[Notes:
62: Paul Rebhun, who died in 1546, was a Lutheran schoolmaster and
pastor. In his _Susanna_ he essayed a more regular and varied
versification than that of the ordinary _Knittelvers_. The
apocryphal story of Susanna was in high favor with the
Protestant playwrights on account of its vindication of a
chaste wife.

64: _Meid_; the housemaid who had brought the news to Susanna’s
mother.
65: _Sehen an_, ‘look on,’ ‘bring to light.’
66: _In_ = _in den_.
67: _Guter ru_, ‘security’; ‘I thought I should be safe there.’
68: _Namens ... für_, ‘they resorted to crime.’
69: _Er_ = _Ehre_.
70: _Gsind_ = _Gesinde_, ‘servants.’
71: Samri and Gorgias are _Hausknechte_ of Susanna’s husband.
72: _Potz_, a euphemism for _Gott_ in oaths: _dass Gott sie
(verdamme)_.
73: _Her_; her husband, Joachim, is away on business.
74: _Schier_ = _bald_.
75: _Gegn ... stellt_ = _stellt sich ihnen entgegen_.
76: _Wert_ = _sich verteidigt_.
77: _Besticht_ = _verführt_.
78: _Wird er zerspalten_ = _kommt er in Zwiespalt mit sich
selbst_ (Tittmann).]
+XLIV. HANS SACHS+
1494-1576. Sachs is the most winsome and versatile German poet of the
16th century. He lived at Nürnberg, practising the trade of the
shoemaker and the art of the mastersinger, and writing an immense number
of poetic productions. His total of verses has been estimated at half a
million. For the reader of to-day he is most enjoyable in his
_Schwänke_, or humorous tales, and his _Fastnachtspiele_, or shrovetide
plays. The text of the first selection follows Keller’s reprint in the
_Bibliothek des Literarischen Vereins in Stuttgart_, Vol. 106, page 109;
that of the second, Goetze’s reprint in Braune’s _Neudrucke_, No. 40.
