The second edition, 1624, follows the original, not the cancel, in the rendering of the first stanza. A translation of cantos i-v by Richard Carew had appeared in 1594. At the end of the ‘Allegory’ in the present copy are six lines of blank verse in Capell’s handwriting and subscribed with his initials. They are a translation of the second stanza of the first book.
