The first part originally appeared in 1586. In the second edition, 1589, a second part was added. The third edition with continuation appeared in 1592. In 1596 appeared a fourth, revised and enlarged, which was re-issued with a new titlepage the following year. The present edition of 1602 was the fifth and was the first one containing all thirteen books. Epistle dedicatory to Mistres Anne Roberts, signed I. T. Address to the reader. As appears from this address the work is a translation of Thomas Watson’s Latin ‘Amyntae Gaudia’. It consists of five ‘Epistles’, some in four-line, some in six-line stanzas, with a final ‘Answer of Phillis to Amintas by the Translator’ in six-line stanzas.
