Any of the following text-books will be found sufficiently full to answer all questions in the general paper up to _1745_. After that date, a wider acquaintance with English literature is desirable. Students who wish for a merit or honours certificate must show a more intimate knowledge than is to be gained from mere text-books. In this case he must read the authors themselves, write out his own opinion, and check it with the opinion of recognised critics.
