E. Shell.= These are of two kinds. (a) Stamped marks made with a steel punch on the body of the projectile just above the rotating band. These refer to the manufacture of the projectile. (b) Painted marks or bands which are clearly visible. They refer to the loading, to the weight of the projectile and to the special purposes for which the projectile is to be used. Painted marks referring to loading are found on the ogive. H. E. shells are usually painted red. Marks referring to weight are painted in black just above the rotating band, as follows:
