From Latson.] =Hygienic Habits of Breathing.=--Chest breathing uses chest chiefly, abdominal breathing uses abdomen chiefly, full breathing uses both. These three forms depend upon whether the breathing is carried on by using the muscles of (1) the chest, (2) the abdomen, or (3) both (see Figs. 77, 78, 79). There has been much debate among physicians, surgeons, and singers as to which of these methods is best. Probably this question would not have been raised but for the confining and deforming effect of clothing upon the waist. _Full breathing is used by children of all races, by both men and women of wild tribes, and by men of civilized countries._ It is undoubtedly the natural way, as well as the easiest and most effective way (Exps. 16, 17, 18).
