On the afternoon of May 11, 1900, the body was placed in the San Isidro Cemetery, Madrid, by the side of his old friends Menéndez Valdés and Leandro Moratin. Already in 1888 the Cortes had voted a sum of money for the creation of a suitable monument, and a magnificent cenotaph now marks the resting-place of the last great Spanish painter.
