On an amphora from Gnatia (Fasano), with a goose and a cock, in white on the black ground, is the quaint dialogue: [ΑΝΗΧΝΟΤΙΑ, ΟΤΟΝΕΛΕΤΡΥΓΟΝΑ] αἴ τὸν χῆνα, ὦ τὸν ἐλετρυγόνα, or, “What, the goose?” “Oh, the cock!”[2242] Etruscan inscriptions do not come within the scope of this chapter, but an Oscan inscription should be mentioned here, which is incised on a vase in the British Museum (F 233), over an actor: [ΑΙΤΝΑΣ] = _Santia_, the Oscan form of Ξανθίας, which was a common name for the slave of comedy.
