The lesson had been hard. The reward was great. For now she knew
that, come what might, the boy who could suffer as he had done when
for a few hours her life had been despaired of, was great enough in
heart and mind to be transformed for ever after.
And she was not mistaken; for thenceforth her task was light, her
happiness unclouded.
