Original text mostly placed commas and periods after closing quotation marks, but occasionally placed them before closing quotation marks. This inconsistency has not been changed here. Simple typographical errors were corrected; unbalanced quotation marks were remedied when the change was obvious, and otherwise left unbalanced. Footnotes have been sequentially renumbered and placed just below the paragraphs that reference them. The index was not checked for proper alphabetization or correct page references. Page 86: The variables in the equation were printed in italics. To improve readability, the underscore characters used elsewhere to indicate italics have been omitted in this case. Page 207: “this is a causal word” originally was printed as “this a a causal word”; changed here by Transcriber.
