baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came and were baptized. 24 For John had not yet been put in prison. 25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purifying. 26 And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testifiedó behold, he is baptizing, and all are going to him." 27 John answered, "A man can receive only what is given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but I have been sent before him. 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease. 31 "He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth belongs to the earth, and of the earth he speaks. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard; yet no one receives his testimony. 33 He who has received his testimony has certified that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. 36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him." 4 1 Now when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." 8 For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to him, "How is it that you, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." 11 The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his cattle?" 13 Jesus answered her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.
