and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation." 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all! 50 You do not understand that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish." 51 He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for that nation only, but also that he would gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they plotted to put him to death. 54 Jesus therefore no longer went about openly among the Jews, but went from there to the country near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim; and there he stayed with his disciples. 55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?" 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, so that they might arrest him. 12 1 Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served, while Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, said, 5 "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief; and as he had the money box, he used to take what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, "Let her alone, she has kept this for the day of my burial. 8 The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." 9 Now a great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, and they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus also to death, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. 12 The next day a great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 They took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel!" 14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, 15 "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming,
