Abdool Messeeh, 1771 or 1772-1827; Martyn, Henry, 1781-1812
O’er the gloomy hills of darkness,
Look, my soul, be still and gaze;
All the promises do travail
With a glorious day of grace:
Blessed Jubilee,
Let thy glorious morning dawn!
Kingdoms wide, that sit in darkness,
Grant them, Lord, the glorious light;
And from eastern coast to western,
May the morning chase the night;
And redemption,
Freely purchased win the day!
Fly abroad, thou mighty gospel
Win and conquer, never cease;
May thy lasting wide dominions,
Multiply, and still increase!
Sway thy sceptre,
Saviour! all the world around.
_Verse alluded to on page 192; paraphrased by Mr. Newton, from the
Latin._
In desert woods with thee, my God,
Where human footsteps never trod,
How happy could I be!
Thou my repose from care, my light
Amidst the darkness of the night,
In solitude my company.
THE END.
