(13)And the passover of the Jews was at hand; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. (14)And he found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers sitting. (15)And having made a scourge of small cords, he drove all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; (16)and to those who sold doves he said: Take these things hence; make not my Father's house a house of merchandise. (17)And his disciples remembered that it is written: for thy house consumes me. (18)The Jews therefore answered and said to him: What sign dost thou show to us, seeing that thou doest these things? (19)Jesus answered and said to them: Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. (20)Therefore said the Jews: Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou raise it up in three days? (21)But he said it of the temple of his body. (22)When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he said this; and they believed the Scripture, and the word which Jesus spoke. (23)And when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, on the feast-day, many believed on his name, beholding his signs which he wrought. (24)But Jesus did not trust himself to them, because he knew all men, (25)and had no need that any one should testify of man; for he himself knew what was in man. III. THERE was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. (2)The same came to him by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou hast come a teacher from God; for no one can do these signs which thou doest, except God be with him. (3)Jesus answered and said to him: Verily, verily, I say to thee, except a man be born again[3:3], he can not see the kingdom of God. (4)Nicodemus says to him: How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? (5)Jesus answered: Verily, verily, I say to thee, except a man be born of water and the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of God. (6)That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (7)Marvel not that I said to thee: Ye must be born again. (8)The wind blows where it will, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but knowest not whence it comes, and whither it goes. So is every one that is born of the Spirit.
