"But, Sigrun," he said, "you understand what I mean. I am glad to have
you living in my house--but that is not enough for me."
"You are my first love, Edward," she said quickly.
She broke off, took his hand, and led him to the window.
"Look out on the lawn," she said. "There was a corner over there that
was covered with pansies when we first came. They were at home there,
and grew up every year by themselves. Once I had a proper flowerbed made
there, and planted other flowers, and they grew and throve too. But now
the bed with the strange flowers is gone, and look--the pansies are
beginning to grow up again in their old place."
