Henry the Eighth erected a magnificent house on the scite of the ancient one of St. Bride, for the reception of Charles the Fifth, in 1522, and called it Bridewell. The king often lodged there, and held a parliament in it in 1525. It was the residence of Katherine in 1529, pending the proceedings relative to her divorce. Edward the Sixth gave it to the corporation of the city of London for an hospital.
