Translation: The foundation stone of this
building was laid in 1880 by Sir Charles Lilley,
for many years Chief Justice, and formerly a
distinguished member of the Government of this
colony. He was prominent amongst those who worked
for the first establishment of this school, and
afterwards, by his generous gifts and by his wise
counsel as a trustee, contributed greatly to its
advancement. The trustees have, therefore, erected
this tablet to perpetuate his memory here. A.D. 1898.
