STUDIES IN THE HISTORY OF MEDIAEVAL SCIENCE, by Charles Homer Haskins
Based upon years of research in European manuscript collections, this
work discusses the science of the Arabs and its transmission to western
Europe; the Greek phase of the mediaeval scientific renaissance; the
Sicilian court of Frederick II on its scientific side as the meeting
point of these Arabic and Greek currents; and, in a final section, the
introduction of the abacus into the English exchequer, Syrian astronomy
and western falconry, and a list of text-books in use at the close of
the twelfth century. $6.00.
ORIGINS OF THE WAR OF 1870, by Robert H. Lord
Professor Lord has recently had the opportunity of using and
transcribing in full the seven volumes of documents in the archives of
the German Foreign Office which contain the German official record of
the diplomatic crisis leading up to the outbreak of the War of 1870.
Save for rare exceptions, these documents have never hitherto been
printed but they are now published _in extenso_. As an introduction
Professor Lord has retraced the history of the crisis in the light of
the mass of new sources. $3.50.
