It bears “The Sphinx” for Egypt, 1801. The first Regiment numbered the 79th was raised in 1759; it served at Arcot, 1751, Plassey 1757, etc., and was disbanded in 1764; it lost thirty-nine officers killed in action during its short life of five years. The second was the 79th Royal Liverpool Volunteers, raised in 1778, and disbanded in 1783. It was nicknamed “The Liverpool Blues.” EIGHTIETH FOOT.
