It bears “the figure of Britannia,” which badge is said to have been given by Queen Anne. It is said its facings once were Orange; if so, it was before 1742. It captured the Colours of the “Second Hampshire Regiment” at Fort Anne in July 1777. It was nicknamed “the Holy Boys,” from selling Bibles for drink in the Peninsula; also “the Fighting Ninth.”
