It bears “the White Horse within the Garter,” “the Royal Cypher and Crown,” with the motto “Nec aspera terrent,” which were granted by King George I. for its services against the Pretender in 1715; also “the Sphinx,” for Egypt, 1801. It was commonly known as “the King’s Hanoverian White Horse” in the eighteenth century. NINTH FOOT.
