The author had recently completed a missionary tour in these states, and his remarks give an insight into the social conditions of the time. He declared that Birkbeck and Fearon had deceived the people of England by portraying America as better than it was. His book is unfair. His observations were acute and are more helpful than would be expected from a soldier of fortune.
