Verily, I have often formed the wish--and afterwards made a picture out of it--that I could be present at all reconciliations in the world, because no love moves us so deeply as _returning_ love. But it must also pain Immortals when they behold us under the violent _tempests_ of life arrayed against each other on the _battle-field_ of enmity, under double blows, and so mortally smitten at once by remote destiny and by that nearer hand which should bind up our wounds!
