“These volumes have no confined and merely learned interest. They are
creditable to the information, research, and thought of the writers,
but not less to their power of clear teaching. They have acquainted
themselves with recent researches and discoveries; but the Dictionary
must prove an invaluable help to the scriptural student, whether lay
or clerical, since it presents, in a form sufficiently popular without
being superficial, an immense amount of serviceable information,
and very necessary to the understanding of the Bible. The mass of
information, indeed, collected in these volumes is so considerable,
that an ordinary reader might be at first alarmed at the idea of the
labour required to master it; while, further, the references to the
special works on particular topics open up fields of research which
in many cases it would need a long and close application to occupy.
But the form of the work relieves the difficulty. The reader may
choose for himself his own line of study, every point in which will be
something gained in his knowledge, in the most natural and agreeable
manner.”--_Daily News._
