English drama -- 17th century; English drama -- Early modern and Elizabethan, 1500-1600
_Bos._ Where's the waiting woman?
Fetch her: some other strangle the children.
[CARIOLA _and_ Children _are brought in by the_ Executioners; _who
presently strangle the_ Children.
Look you, there sleeps your mistress.
_Cari._ O, you are damned
Perpetually for this! My turn is next,
Is't not so ordered?
_Bos._ Yes, and I am glad
You are so well prepared for't.
_Cari._ You are deceived, sir,
I am not prepared for't, I will not die;
I will first come to my answer, and know
How I have offended.
_Bos._ Come, despatch her.--
You kept her counsel; now you shall keep ours.
_Cari._ I will not die, I must not; I am contracted
To a young gentleman.
_1st Execut._ Here's your wedding-ring.
_Cari._ Let me but speak with the duke; I'll discover
Treason to his person.
_Bos._ Delays:--throttle her.
_1st Execut._ She bites and scratches.
_Cari._ If you kill me now,
I am damned; I have not been at confession
This two years.
_Bos._ [_to_ Executioners]. When?
_Cari._ I am quick with child.
_Bos._ Why, then,
Your credit's saved.
[_The_ Executioners _strangle_ CARIOLA.
Bear her into the next room;
Let these lie still.
[_Exeunt the_ Executioners _with the body of_ CARIOLA.
_Enter_ FERDINAND.
_Ferd._ Is she dead?
_Bos._ She is what
You'd have her. But here begin your pity:
[_Shows the_ Children _strangled._
Alas, how have these offended?
_Ferd._ The death
Of young wolves is never to be pitied.
_Bos._ Fix your eye here.
_Ferd._ Constantly.
_Bos._ Do you not weep?
Other sins only speak; murder shrieks out:
The element of water moistens the earth,
But blood flies upwards and bedews the heavens.
_Ferd._ Cover her face; mine eyes dazzle: she died young.
_Bos._ I think not so; her infelicity
Seemed to have years too many.
_Ferd._ She and I were twins;
And should I die this instant, I had lived
Her time to a minute.
_Bos._ It seems she was born first:
You have bloodily approved the ancient truth,
That kindred commonly do worse agree
Than remote strangers.
