Abu Dawud al-Sijistani (817–889) gathered and sifted an immense body of hadith to compile his Sunan, selecting those of legal relevance and noting weaknesses where he found them. Highly regarded by scholars of his own time, it became one of the six canonical Sunni collections and a foundational source for jurisprudence, especially valued for its concentration on the practical rulings of the faith.
