Al-Biruni

The polymath of Central Asia whose studies of India, astronomy, mathematics, and the sciences made him one of the greatest scholars of the medieval world.

Life

Born in Khwarazm in 973, al-Biruni served at various courts and, in the entourage of Mahmud of Ghazna, spent years in India, learning Sanskrit and producing his masterwork on Indian religion and science, the Kitab al-Hind. He wrote prolifically on astronomy, mathematics, geography, and mineralogy before his death around 1048. No authentic likeness survives.

His career unfolded amid political upheaval in Central Asia, and his Indian studies were bound up with Mahmud's campaigns of conquest and plunder — a tension between the scholar's curiosity and the violence of his patron's expeditions.

Teachings & Morals

Al-Biruni combined rigorous observation, mathematics, and a remarkable comparative, empirical spirit; his account of India sought to understand Hindu beliefs and sciences on their own terms, and he calculated the Earth's radius and discussed the possibility of a heliocentric model.

A scholar attached to courts and campaigns, al-Biruni fought no wars, though he traveled with Mahmud of Ghazna's military expeditions into India, which gave him his subject even as he deplored the destruction.
