Al-Tirmidhi

Imam al-Tirmidhi

The hadith scholar whose Jami is one of the six canonical Sunni collections, notable for grading traditions and noting the legal views attached to them.

Life

Al-Tirmidhi (824–892), a student of al-Bukhari, compiled the Jami al-Tirmidhi, distinctive for classifying each hadith's reliability and recording the differing opinions of jurists — an early bridge between hadith and law. One of the six canonical books (Kutub al-Sitta) of Sunni Islam, it remains a standard reference, and he also wrote on the Prophet's character (Shama'il).
