"Fatima Is Part of Me": Bukhari 5230, the Proposal to Abu Jahl's Daughter, and the Fadak Dispute

A Sermon Heard by a Boy

Madinah, in the years after the conquest of Makkah. Al-Miswar ibn Makhrama — who notes that he was then a boy just reaching maturity — stands in the mosque and hears the Prophet deliver a sermon from the pulpit. The subject is not war, treasury, or law. It is a marriage proposal inside the Prophet's own household: Ali ibn Abi Talib, his cousin and son-in-law, has been offered the daughter of Abu Jahl — the man remembered as the Prophet's bitterest enemy in Makkah — as a second wife alongside Fatima. What the Prophet said from that pulpit is preserved in Sahih al-Bukhari, the book Sunni Islam ranks as its most authentic after the Quran. And for centuries, one sentence from that sermon — "Fatima is a part of me" — has been lifted out of the marriage question entirely and deployed in a very different battle: the dispute over Fadak, Abu Bakr, and the succession to the Prophet.
