The Order You Read Is Not the Order It Came

Open a printed Qur''an and the second chapter you meet is al-Baqara, 286 verses long. Yet almost every account agrees that the first words revealed to Muhammad were five verses of Surah 96, al-''Alaq, which sits near the very back of the book.

Translation (Q 96:1-5): "Recite in the name of your Lord who created — created man from a clinging clot. Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous — who taught by the pen — taught man that which he knew not."
