SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
HEATH, with beardless tips, within the blossom; flowers sessile,
upright, and terminating the ends of the branches by fours, crowded
together, flesh-coloured, and waved; leaves by fours, linear, and
smooth.
DESCRIPTION.
STEM shrubby, a span high, upright, and branching; the smaller branches
are numerous, and between erect and spreading.
LEAVES by fours, linear, smooth, thickish, shining, and spreading,
footstalks very short.
FLOWERS sit close in upright bunches, by fours, on the ends of the
branches, scarce any footstalks.
EMPALEMENT four-leaved, the leaflets at the base are broadly egg-shaped,
and toothed, sharp-pointed above; there are three floral leaves,
awl-shaped, channelled, and pressed to the cup.
BLOSSOM swelled out, and flesh-coloured, narrowed at the mouth, the
segments are nearly heart-shaped, waved, spreading, and very large.
CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads, tips beardless, and within the blossom.
POINTAL. Seed-bud turban-shaped, and slightly furrowed. Shaft
thread-shaped. Summit four-cornered.
Native of the Cape of Good Hope.
Flowers from the month of June till August.

ERICA, antheris aristatis, sub-inclusis; stylo sub-exserto; corollis
urceolatis, odoratis, purpureis; foliis ternis, incurvatis, aculeatis;
caule rufescente.
DESCRIPTIO.
CAULIS fruticosus, ramosus. Rami et ramuli hirsuti, erecto-patentes.
FOLIA terna, viride-farinosa, arcuata, incurva, aculeata, subtus
sulcata; petiolis adpressis.
FLORES in ramulis terminales, umbellati, plerumque terni; pedunculi
aculeati, bracteis tribus aculeatis instructi.
CALYX. Perianthium tetraphyllum; foliolis ovatis, aculeatis,
pallide-viridia.
COROLLA urceolata, purpurea, odorata; oris laciniis rotundatis,
sub-erectis.
STAMINA. Filamenta octo, capillaria; antheræ aristatæ, sub-inclusæ.
PISTILLUM. Germen tiaræforme, pubescens, ad basin glandulosum. Stylus
filiformis, sub-exsertis. Stigma tetragonum.
Habitat ad Caput Bonæ Spei.
Floret a mense Martii in Maium.
