He wrote a novel called _The Buccaneers_, and a work entitled _Gotham and the Gothamites_, both of which reflected on the society of New York at that time, and caused the author to be sued for libel and his works suppressed. A Drama, as performed at the Boston Theatre. Boston, 1800. 12mo, pp. 46. LAWSON, JAMES JAMES LAWSON, born in Glasgow, Scotland, November 9, 1799; died in Yonkers, N. Y., March 20, 1880. He was educated at Glasgow University and came to New York in 1815. He was at first employed as a clerk in the counting house of a maternal uncle, who was a merchant of New York. He began writing for the New York _Literary Gazette_ in 1826, and from 1827 to 1829 was the assistant editor of the _Morning Courier_. He edited the _Mercantile Advertiser_ from 1829 to 1833.
