Reuter (1810-1874), an exceedingly popular humorist who wrote in
the Low (i.e., North) German dialect. After Reuter, a native of
Mecklenburg-Schwerin, had been condemned to death in 1833 on the
(false) charge of plotting high treason against Prussia with certain
fellow students at the University of Jena, his sentence was commuted to
thirty years’ imprisonment; but in 1839 he was surrendered by Prussia
to his native state and in 1840 was given his freedom.~
