Looking unto Jesus.
Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus
Christ.
_2 St. Peter_, iii. 18.
Bear Jesus Christ the Lord in mind,
Who left His heavenly throne,
And, out of love to humankind,
Put human nature on—
Our Brother, born of flesh and blood,
To make His sure salvation good;
Then thank Him for His love.
Bear Jesus Christ the Lord in mind,
Who sore by grief was tried;
A Ransom for our souls to find,
Upon the Cross He died:
He vanquished sin and every foe,
And saved us from eternal woe;
Then thank Him for His love.
Bear Jesus Christ the Lord in mind,
Who, freed from grief and pain,
A Conqueror death hath failed to bind,
The third day rose again;
The righteous acts of Christ the Lord
Have life and peace to man restored;
Than thank Him for His love.
Bear Jesus Christ the Lord in mind,
Who, all His sorrows past,
In light of those He left behind,
Returned to heaven at last,
There to prepare for us a place,
Where we shall always see His face;
Then thank Him for His love.
Bear Jesus Christ the Lord in mind,
Who, from His throne above,
Once more will come, the Judge assigned
Both quick and dead to prove;
Take heed that thou mayst stand the test,
And enter then His holy rest,
To thank Him for His love.
Lord, let me ever bear in mind,
And let my faith embrace
Thy love to me and all mankind,
And may Thy cheering grace
In hours of sorrow comfort give,
And cause me after death to live,
And thank Thee for Thy love.
Gottergebenheit.
Meine Seele dürstet nach Gott.
Nach Dir, o Gott, verlanget mich;
Mein Gott, ich denke stets an Dich:
Zieh mich nach Dir, nach Dir mich wend
Aus Zion deine Hülf mir send.
Ach, wer wird mich befreien doch
Von diesem schweren Sündenjoch?
O Herr, ich sehne mich nach Dir;
Befreie mich und hilf doch mir.
Es ist mein Will nach Dir gericht;
Doch das Vollbringen mir gebricht:
Und wenn ich hab was Guts gethan,
So klebt doch was Unreines dran.
Gedenke, dass ich bin dein Kind,
Vergieb und tilge meine Sünd;
Dass ich zu Dir, mit freiem Lauf,
Mich könne schwingen himmelauf.
Den Sinn der Welt rott in mir aus,
Sei Du nur Herr in meinem Haus;
Den Schild des Glaubens mir verleih,
Und brich des Feindes Pfeil entzwei.
Nach Dir, mein Gott, lass stets forthin
Gerichtet sein den ganzen Sinn:
Ich eigne Dich mir gänzlich zu,
Und such in Dir nur meine Ruh.
Hinweg, hinweg, du schnöde Lust,
Bleib mir auf Erden unbewusst;
Was mein Herz fort vergnügen soll,
Des ist allein der Himmel voll.
Ach, alles was mich reisst von Dir,
O höchstes Gut, das treib von mir:
In Dir, mein Gott, in Dir allein
Lass hinfort meine Freude sein.
