In contemplation
Of God’s Creation,
How my Soul burneth,
While it discerneth
Proofs of His Wisdom, and Goodness, and Might:
Thus would He teach us
The Joy that will reach us,
When to that Heaven
An entrance is given,
Where is no need of the sun to give light.
Let us consenting,
Heart’s gladness venting,
Tunefully singing,
Gifts freely bringing,
Render due praise to the God of all Love:
Meek adoration
Is our best oblation;
Fervent thanksgiving,
And sanctified living,
Form the sweet Incense that He will approve.
Evening and morning,
Sunset and dawning,
Blessings increasing,
Burdens releasing,
Near us He tarries, all evil to chase:
While we are sleeping
His Watch He is keeping;
When we awaken,
His Goodness, unshaken,
Showers down riches of Mercy and Grace.
Earthly things alter,
God cannot falter;
Wisely ordaining,
Firmly sustaining,
His Will and Purpose are steadfast and sure:
Tried with temptation,
He brings us Salvation;
Sorrow and sadness
He turns into Gladness;
His Loving Mercies for ever endure.
King of Creation!
Lord of Salvation!
Hear my confessions,
Blot my transgressions
Out of the Book where they chronicled stand:
Gladly confiding,
I trust to Thy guiding;
Humbly submitting,
As Thou seèst fitting,
All things I take from Thy merciful Hand.
Griefs, though heart-rending,
All have their ending;
Strong winds may bluster,
Dark clouds may muster,
Through them the sun will break forth at the last:
So, when I languish
In sorrow and anguish,
Hoping for pardon,
I think of that Garden,
Waiting the just when life’s storms are all past.
Abendlied.
Sei Du mir nah,
Jesu, mit hellen Kerzen,
Treib der Sünde Dunkelheit
Weg aus meinem Herzen.
Der Sonnen Licht
Uns jetzt gebricht:
O unerschaffne Sonne,
Brich mit deinem Licht hervor
Mir zur Freud und Wonne.
Was sich geregt,
Und vor bewegt,
Ruht jetzt von seinen Werken:
Lass mich, Herr, in stiller Ruh
Dein Werk in mir merken.
Wann aber soll
Der Wechsel wohl
Der Tag und Nächte weichen?
Wenn der Tag anbrechen wird,
Dem kein Tag zu gleichen!
Ja dann wird nicht
Der Sonnen Licht
Jerusalem verlieren:
Denn das Lamm ist selbst das Licht,
Das die Stadt wird zieren.
