_Knick._ Un ich glawb net os ich si lava widder coom--for wann se mich

_Alice._ ’S is now yusht ea plan for era ous ’m waig tzu cooma, un sell

[_KNICKERBOCKER sits in arm chair and is attired by ALICE in
woman’s dress; on rising, the petticoats but reach his knees._]

_DAME enters, D. F._
_Dame._ Well, doh bin ich widder tzurick un ich sæ der Van Slaus is
faurt. Un wo is seller lodle, der Rip? Widder drous ommanot. Un wær is
sell os dort in sellam shtool huckt?
_Alice._ Sell is de olt pedler fraw--se is cooma for era sauch os se doh
g’lust hut.
_Dame._ De pedler fraw! Now, yusht ob mit der--ous ’m house mit all deim
dreck.
_Knick._ (_Aside._) Yaw, wann ich yusht amohl safe drous wær!
[_KNICKERBOCKER rises, hobbles forward, R.; but forgetting the
shortness of the petticoats, in curtseying, is discovered by the
DAME, from the exposure of his legs._
_Dame._ Shweffle un solpater! Wær husht now doh? ’N humbug--’n pedler
fraw mit so bæ we selly! (_She rushes up to door and locks it--then with
a broom, L. U. E., pursues him round--he flings bonnet in her face._
_Knick._ Wann der deifel hinner ame is mus mer sich waira--un doh gaits.
[_He jumps through the window, which is dashed to pieces, he
disappears.--DAME rushes up, with broom, toward window.--ALICE
laughs._
_Dame._ Un du lauchsht mich noch ous, du shlomp du! Anes is yusht so
shlecht os ’s onner. All du’n mich yusht abusa un uf mich imposa--un now
ob mit der, grawd nuf un ins bet.
[_DAME drives ALICE off, and follows, R.--Scene closes._

heard--shortly after, RIP enters, with his fowling piece, L. H._
