Sacred Hymns from the German: Translated by Frances Elizabeth Cox
Hymns, German; Hymns, German -- Translations into English
Together now your voices raising,
Vow truth to God, hand join’d in hand,
Till, on his glories ever gazing,
Ye meet in heaven’s own happy land;
Eternal Lord of heaven above,
Look down and bless their plighted love.
In deines Heilands Hand.
Du lässt dich zur Verwandelung
In diese Felder sä’n,
Mit Hoffnung und Versicherung,
Viel schöner aufzustehn.
Verbirg dich unserm Angesicht
Gottfried Neumann. 1778.
HYMN FOR A FUNERAL.
It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: It is sown
in weakness; it is raised in power.
1 Cor. xv. 42, 43.
At length releas’d from many woes,
How sweetly dost thou sleep!
How calm and peaceful thy repose,
While Christ thy soul doth keep.
In earth’s wide field thy body now
We sow, which lifeless lies,
In sure and certain hope that thou
More glorious shalt arise.
Then rest thee in thy lowly bed,
Nor shall our hearts repine;
Thy toils and woes are finished,
A happy lot is thine.
The Bridegroom will not long delay,
The Shepherd soon will come,
And take his cherish’d lamb away
To his eternal home.
Not one of all his flock redeem’d
Will Jesus fail to bring,
Who have their Saviour’s love esteem’d
O’er every earthly thing.
BEIM BEGRÄBNISS EINES KINDES.
Selig sind die Todten:
Die in dem Herrn sterben.
So hab ich obgesieget,
Mein Lauf ist nun vollbracht:
Ich bin gar wohl vergnüget,
Zu tausend guter Nacht!
Ihr aber, meine Lieben,
Thut nicht so ängstiglich:
Was wollt ihr euch betrüben?
Stehts doch sehr gut um mich.
Fahr hin, o Angst und Schmerzen,
Fahr immer, immerhin!
Ich freue mich von Herzen,
Dass ich erlöset bin:
Ich leb in tausend Freuden
In meines Schöpfers Hand;
Mich trifft und rührt kein Leiden,
So dieser Welt bekannt.
Die noch auf Erden wallen
In irrthumsvoller Zeit,
Vermögen kaum zu lallen
Von froher Ewigkeit:
Viel besser wohl gestorben,
Als in der Welt gelebt;
Die Schwachheit ist verdorben,
Worinnen ich geschwebt.
