Of this mission Dr. Pond writes: I give you an opportunity to share my joy by inclosing the letter from Mrs. Hall, our teacher at Santa Cruz. She has been for three months teaching a class of Japanese after her teaching in the Chinese school is ended; that is after nine o'clock in the evening--often not beginning till nearly ten. The two schools are now happily united at our Chinese Mission House: LETTER FROM MRS. KATE V. HALL. "My heart is filled with gladness this New Year, and I am sure that the tidings I send you will make you happy also. Four Japanese and two Chinese have given their hearts to the Lord in the past month; two Japanese and two Chinese will receive baptism Sunday, and the other two Japanese will wait till the following Communion, as they wish to study the Bible more. I am satisfied to have them wait, if they wish, as I want them to have all doubts cleared away. "I will not send a report for the Japanese, as they came into the Chinese Mission three nights ago. I am so glad they were willing to attend the Chinese school, as my work at the Chinese Mission is growing each night, and often when I reached the Japanese school I was so hoarse I could hardly speak, so now, by remaining a half hour later, I will be able to do the same amount of work without hurrying so.
