TRANSCRIBER’S NOTES
In the plain text version Italic text is denoted by _underscores_.
The sign ^ represents a superscript; thus e^ represents the lower case
letter _e_ written immediately above the previous character.
Most of the Greek words included in the original work have been
transliterated to the Latin alphabet. The only exception has been the
words belonging to the song Prayer to the Muse. The transliterated
Greek words have been signaled in the text with the sign [Greek:
text transliterated].
The musical files for the musical examples discussed in the book
have been provided by Jude Eylander. Those examples can be heard by
clicking on the [Listen] tab. This is only possible in the HTML version
of the book. The scores that appear in the original book have been
included as images.
In the plain text version there are some musical signs that cannot be
reproduced. They are indicated in the text with the label [music sign].
Those music signs are included as images in the HTML version of the
work.
In some cases the scores that were used to generate the music files
differ slightly from the original scores. Those differences are due to
modifications that were made during the process of creating the musical
archives. These scores are included as png images, and can be seen by
clicking on the [PNG] tag in the HTML version of the book.
Obvious punctuation and other printing errors have been corrected.
Some of the tables and diagrams presented in the plain text version
have been modified from their original lay-out to avoid unsupported
display. The original layout of those tables and diagrams are available
in the HTML version where they have been included as images.
The book cover has been modified by the Transcriber and is included
in the public domain.
