Some curious particulars relative to the King's Laundress occur in the _Ordinances of the Household_ in the 17 Hen. VIII. p. 215, who was, it appears, then called Ann Harris. Her wages were originally 10_l._ per annum, but she obtained an addition of 6_l._ 13_s._ 4_d._ more on one occasion, and on another, 66_s._ so that she ultimately was paid 20_l._ per annum. She was bound to provide "as much sweet powder, sweet herbes, and other sweet thinges as shall be necessary to be occupied for the sweet keeping" of the articles entrusted to her; and it was expressly stated that she was to find wood and soap and every thing else out of her wages.
