It has borne the motto “Viret in Æternum” from its formation. It was commonly known in the eighteenth century as “the Green Dragoons” from its facings; and was nicknamed in the Peninsula war “the Ragged Brigade” from its caring more for work than show, for during the war it served in thirty-two affairs besides general actions, and lost 274 men and 1009 horses.
