It was renumbered 17th in 1763. It received its title in 1876 in honour of H. R. H. the Field Marshal Commanding-in-Chief, who served in the Regiment. It was nicknamed “Bingham’s Dandies,” from its Colonel (Lord Bingham) causing the men’s uniforms to fit so well. The first 17th Dragoons was called the “Edinburgh Light Horse,” raised in Scotland in 1759 and disbanded in 1763. The first 18th Dragoons, is now the 17th Lancers. The second 18th Dragoons was raised in Ireland by Lord Drogheda in 1759 as the 19th Light Dragoons, it became the 18th in 1763, and served in Holland in 1799; during the Peninsula war at Corunna, Vittoria, Nive and Orthes, also at Quatre-Bras and Waterloo; its uniform was scarlet with white facings; it was disbanded in 1822 when it was the 18th King’s Irish Hussars; its uniform then was blue with white facings.
