Life
Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758), a Congregationalist minister in colonial Massachusetts, was a central figure of the Great Awakening revival, famous for the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." Far more than a revivalist, he was a rigorous philosophical theologian who fused Calvinist doctrine with Enlightenment thought in works on the will, virtue, and religious affections. Briefly president of Princeton before his death, he is widely considered America's greatest theologian.
